About Us & Our History

Concept

The concept behind Kalè Gastrobar is to “share the view, share the flavour, share the vibe.” It is not a traditional taverna; rather, it combines the conviviality of a bar with a kitchen that treats local ingredients with creativity. Reviewers describe it as a “delightful culinary gem” offering innovative dishes crafted with high‑quality ingredients and meticulous attention to detail. The atmosphere feels relaxed yet special, especially during sunset. Signature dishes often mentioned by diners include octopus salad and shrimp tartarpappardelle and moussaka croquettes and creative starters like carpaccio. The kitchen pairs these plates with a well‑curated wine listNational Geographic notes that Cretan wines shine at Kalè, while cocktails and craft spirits broaden the experience.

Kalè’s atmosphere owes much to its architecture. The dining area sits on a stepped platform facing the sea, while the kitchen, restrooms and storage occupy a building on the opposite side of the narrow municipal road. Large openings blur the line between inside and outside, and seats on the steps invite passersby to look in. White walls, wooden seats, marble table tops and metal detailing draw on the colours and textures of the harbour — the fishermen’s makeshift shipyards and the sailboats anchored nearby. The result is a modern yet warm space that complements the historic surroundings and makes Kalè a unique place to savour Cretan hospitality.

” One of the best services my wife and I have ever experienced in a restaurant! Wonderful gastrobar with great vibes, excellent staff, very good prices for the dishes that are very tasty! Well done to the guys!“

Our History

From Tavern to Gastrobar

How it all started
Opened in 2025

The site now occupied by Kalè Gastrobar has long been part of Ierapetra’s social life. For many years a seaside tavernoperated here, split into two small buildings on either side of a narrow road. When the owners decided to create something new, they kept this unusual layout: the north building houses the kitchen and service areas, while the south building was rebuilt as an open dining terrace overlooking the harbour. The transformation was completed in 2025 by Telford 46 Architects, who designed both the architecture and interior.

A Name Rooted in History

Kalè Gastrobar’s name is a nod to Fort Kalés, the Venetian fortress that dominates the harbour. The fort was originally built by the Venetians in the 13th century to protect Ierapetra from pirates. In 1508 it was damaged by an earthquake and raids but was later repaired when the Ottomans took the town in 1647. Its name comes from the Turkish word “kule” (tower), and today the fortress still watches over the port, hosting cultural events and providing the backdrop for Kalè’s terrace. Choosing this name connects the gastrobar to Ierapetra’s maritime heritage.

Design Philosophy

The historic and religious landmarks around the harbour influenced the restaurant’s restrained design. Telford 46 kept the architectural language simple and open so the seaside urban environment enters into a continuous dialogue with the interior. Seating on the steps facing the neighbourhood encourages interaction with locals and visitors. Materials were chosen for their evocative links to the port: white surfaces echo the surrounding buildings, metal details and light fixtures recall shipyards, wooden seats and cladding reference fishing boats, and marble table tops bring the natural colours of the harbour indoors.  Cloth elements used for shade or as room dividers suggest the sails of the boats moored nearby.

A New Chapter for Ierapetra’s Dining Scene

Since opening, Kalè Gastrobar has become a standout in Ierapetra’s culinary scene. Guests praise its warm service, stylish décor and the way every dish combines creativity with respect for local ingredients. Many reviewers consider it an essential stop in town, noting that reservations are recommended because it is very popular. Dishes like octopus salad, shrimp tartar, moussaka croquettes, carpaccio and juicy chicken reflect the kitchen’s modern take on Mediterranean cuisine, while a curated selection of Cretan wines and craft cocktails completes the experience. Within a short time, Kalè has transformed a familiar harbour site into a contemporary gastrobar that honours Ierapetra’s history while offering guests a fresh, sophisticated dining experience.
